Facebook went public today with its initial public offering (IPO) at $38 a share. It closed at $38.23 with the highest trading volume of any company’s first day since GM. That’s a lot of volume for such small gains. The NASDAQ also fell a bit today. Overall, for such a potentially risky stock, Facebook did end up in positive territory on its first day. Unlike other social networking sites, I’ve always felt that Facebook managed to do something different — it attracted old people. Once your parents or even grandparents got on to see pictures of their kids and grandkids, the marketing potential became something much different than your typical trendy “next-big-thing” website. Old people will stick with it. However, just because people are on it, doesn’t mean it will make money for investors. Facebook sells ad space, but it’s not a Google or an Amazon in the way it’s tied to commerce. Are Farmville bucks really going to “save” Western capitalism? Maybe for Zynga . Nonetheless, It will be interesting to see where this goes in the months ahead.

According to the U.K. Daily Mail , customs officials in South Korea have confiscated about 17,000 Chinese “miracle cure” capsules, filled with the powdered flesh of aborted and stillborn babies. The existence of these pills was first uncovered last summer by a South Korean documentary, which found that the manufacturers received a regular supply of tissue from a network of affiliated abortion clinics and hospitals. It’s tempting to assume that this outrage will confine itself to the Far East. After all, reporter Yojana Sharma revealed in a 1995 Daily Telegraph story that, in China, the eating of human fetuses for health reasons is not uncommon. She even obtained a “fist-sized glass bottle stuffed with thumb-sized fetuses” from a state hospital, by pretending to be sick. “Normally, we doctors take them home to eat,” she was told. That doesn’t sound like the kind of thing we have to worry about over here, where taboos against cannibalism have held up quite nicely over the years. Nevertheless, the Daily Mail story ought to concern Americans, because many other elements conducive to that result are present in our society today. We have a government that condones the destruction of unborn human life, and a pop culture that practically revels in it. We have an academic elite that promotes a utilitarian view of humanity, which it spreads through the pseudo-scientific field of “bioethics.” A corrosive, anti-human philosophy has crept through our society, in the form of environmentalism, animal rights activism, and militant atheism. Our liberal media promote this depravity by portraying it as the norm, and its opponents as the lunatic fringe. Finally, there’s the lucrative and virtually unregulated abortion industry, which is able to sell a product that it’s been paid to take in the first place. In March of 2000, congressional hearings were held on the trafficking of human fetal tissues and organs. If you don’t remember this happening, that’s because it was barely reported at the time, despite the sensational nature of the testimony. The proceedings focused on two wholesalers that acted as conduits between the abortion clinics and their buyers. Because selling human body parts is prohibited by federal law, they claimed instead that the clinics “donated” the parts to the wholesalers, charging only a “site fee” for the rooms in which the dissections took place, and that the wholesalers then “donated” the parts to their clients, while charging handsomely for delivery. That evasion was contradicted by a brochure from one of the wholesalers that connected the payments directly to the particular tissues and organs. The price list read like a menu (brains $999, livers $150, eyes $75, etc.), adding that each would be discounted by 30 percent if “significantly fragmented.” Damning as this evidence appeared to be, no action was ever taken. These body parts are presumably being used for medical experimentation, which is odious enough, considering that they cannot have been donated by their rightful owners. Only somebody as grossly unethical as an “ethicist” could endorse the killing of one human being in order to use its remains to treat others. Furthermore, it’s a short distance from that point to the use of those remains for industrial purposes. San Francisco-based Neocutis, Inc. started out using tissue derived from fetal stem cells for medical purposes, such as the treatment of burn victims. Before long, it discovered — just as the Chinese had — that the fetal tissue has anti-aging properties that can be used to help people look younger. Today, Neocutis boasts a number of cosmetic skin products containing an ingredient called Processed Skin Cell Proteins, which “uses cultured fetal skin cells to obtain an optimal, naturally balanced mixture of skin nutrients.” In this case, the product contains no part of the original dead baby, but only the tissue that has since been generated from it in the laboratory. Is that degree of separation sufficient to deny its barbarity? If Neocutis were to produce a similar product in pill form, would it be okay to take it? We only know about Neocutis’ use of fetal tissue because it actually brags about it on its website. We have no idea what’s being done with the vast majority of what the abortion clinics have “donated” over the years. Not only should those 2000 hearings have been front page news, but they should have drawn investigative reporters to the abortion industry like starving piranhas. Instead, the media chose almost unanimously to become silently complicit in the atrocity. Where’s a South Korean documentarian when you really need one? Pondering People Pills: Don’t think it can’t happen here by Daniel Clark syndicated from The Land of the Free .

Though at one time barely considered worthy of the appellation of literature, scholars of popular culture have today established the thesis that comic books and other forms of media expression derived from these illustrated periodicals serve as a snapshot of the perspectives and assumptions prevalent at particular points in American history. Certain characters and series evoke more reflection on certain aspects of culture and ideas than others. For example, the Fantastic Four evoke reflection upon the loving but some times contentious relationship inside a family. The plight of the X-Men have been compared to assorted struggles for civil rights and social acceptance. Likewise, the two characters that most epitomize what it means to be an American are none other than Superman and Captain America. Interestingly, in recent interpretations of these characters, creators have done nearly everything in their artistic power to disassociate these characters from the nation as a whole. For example, as almost as iconic as his bright red cape and the oversized “S”-shaped insignia on his costume is the credo summarizing his never-ending struggle for truth, justice and the American way. However, the film “Superman Returns” poopooed those noble sentiments when Perry White instead uttered “Truth, justice, and ALL THAT STUFF.” Given that Superman is from another planet and suppose to be the epitome of humanity (hence the name SUPERMAN), one might at least understand that the renowned Kryptonian might want to remain somewhat aloof from taking sides in the common conflicts plaguing the world and instead focus on those threats far beyond powers and abilities of mortal men. A character named “Captain America” doesn’t have such a luxury. Even if Captain America disagrees with a policy of the United States government at any particular time such as in the case of the Marvel Civil War where a law was passed requiring costumed adventurers to publicly reveal their secret identities, the character must be identified with those values upon which the nation’s foundation rests and which true heroes must call institutions back to. If one if going to rake in a fortune off of a character with a name like Captain America, the least you can do is not to view the word “America” in the same category as the vilest of profanities. However, producers allowed the option of dropping the name Captain America from the title in overseas markets. This is the equivalent of not wanting to call Superman “Superman” because part of the name offends feminists or because the prefix “super” offends hyper-egalitarians and fanatic pluralists denying the existence of gradations of value. The countries that were listed as taking up distributors on the offer included Russia, Ukraine, and South Korea. Russia and Ukraine might be understandable. After all, both of these countries were once part of the Soviet Union and the totalitarian tendency at the heart of Communism in that part of the world is likely not as dead as Americans have been led to believe. South Korea is a different story. Since the 1950′s, Americans have died and put their lives on the line to protect the lower half of that disputed peninsula. If anything, South Korea ought to be at the front of the line pledging its support for Captain America being called “Captain America”. Sophisticates might sneer down their noses at concern being expressed over a mere comic book character and movie. However, it won’t be a laughing matter should those responsible for these forms of cultural expression undermine the perception of this nation as a shining city on a hill that is our last best chance on earth. Those Ashamed Of America Shouldn’t Make A Penny Off The Name by Frederick Meekins syndicated from The Land of the Free .

Police in Prince William County, VA just released a list of the most dangerous intersections and I discovered that on a single trip to Chantilly I managed to drive through the most dangerous intersection in Manassas, the most hazardous in Manassas Park and the third most threatening in the rest of the county. This is because I live in the land of “you can’t get there from here.” Northern Virginia residents have only a very limited number of through streets and major thoroughfares. Drivers are forced to crowd into a handful of routes when they want to go east or west and even fewer when they want to go north. Any tourist ever stuck on I–95 knows what I’m talking about. There is no way to plan a route avoiding dangerous, packed intersections because there are no alternatives. Much of this can be blamed on what I call the Stonewall Jackson school of traffic engineering: “Why Stonewall whipped the Yankee’s behind using this very road network. There is no need to improve on perfection.” In effect this means replacing a one–lane corduroy road with a winding two–lane asphalt design is viewed as a technological breakthrough rivaling that of the flush toilet. And it’s not going to get any better where I live. County planners are in the process of approving a 22–acre mixed use development that will have 360 apartments, two hotels and an office building. And oh yes, there will be only a single exit from the development linking it to neighboring roads. Once more state and local government succeeds where national government and Richard Branson failed. The county and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) have managed to monetize space. The right to drive into or out of a parcel of land makes it extremely valuable, because curb cuts are rationed tighter than ethics at a GSA convention. Gaining permission for that vital absence of concrete curbing often requires a lobbyist. I’m sure the thinking here was you can drain a bathtub with a single exit, why not a real estate development? Yet the same planners would not approve a movie theatre with one exit and they wouldn’t approve a shopping mall interior with a single exit either. Maybe we should give the fire marshal authority to approve road and development design. Installing a sprinkler system in your car would be a small price to pay for more efficient transportation. Fortunately, due to cul–de–sac laden, backward road design theory, most of the crashes here are low speed encounters. According to a press release from TomTom, the GPS people, the Washington, DC area has the most congested traffic and slowest average speeds in the nation. Many drivers serve a positively organic role in the Capitol’s traffic circulatory system, functioning as automotive plaque that clogs the artery and slows us down. I recently returned from a trip to Dallas and traffic there was a revelation. At 4 PM on Friday I was driving down LBJ Freeway and Central Expressway, two major thoroughfares that are packed daily with rush hour traffic. Auto density was the same as on I–95, but guess what? I was moving at speeds in excess of 40 mph! I felt like a Swiss neutron racing the speed of light. What’s more, I passed two sets of parked police cruisers with their lights flashing and traffic did not grind to a complete halt. I know this is hard to believe for DC drivers, because here any blinking light more intense than a turn signal has a tendency to stupefy motorists. The sun glinting off a jack handle while changing a flat, the reflection from a trooper’s radar detector or shiny bling worn by someone waiting for AAA all cause motorists to immediately hit the brake. The only hint of good news regarding our congestion is the number of teenagers who don’t have or want a driver’s license is at an all time low. Unfortunately, those with a new license are going to be just as incompetent as the rest of their family. This is because in Virginia getting a driver’s license no longer requires actual driving in a car with a grim state trooper waiting for you to make a mistake. Instead teenagers are supposed to drive for 40 hours with their parents beside them and follow parental advice. Later, when they get the coveted license, teenagers can boast: “I drive whatever speed I like in left lane, just like peepaw.” “I always slow down when a car is stopped on the shoulder. It might be Uncle Tran.” “Mom says leave three car lengths between me and the car ahead at a stoplight, in case I start to roll while texting.” Or “Like granny, I always brake when approaching a green light, because you never know.” And driving incompetence, with its accompanying congestion, will be passed down from generation to generation just like a genetic abnormality.
Greek troubles are reaching a tipping point. The new government couldn’t form a governing coalition willing to deal with their financial woes as the leftists are unwilling to be forced into unpopular austerity measures. So, a new election must be held with the populist left riding an anti-austerity wave. Not good. But events are moving faster than a calendar can anticipate — the euro is down to $1.27 as the money fleeing Greece only accelerates. The Greek stock market hasn’t been this low since 1990. In the midst of all this, there’s speculation that Spain and Italy may also have to reassess their relationship with the euro zone — another 26 Italian banks were downgraded today . American markets, which were generally down again today, are starting the process of decoupling as much as they can before that final ripple comes: the eventual reappearance of the drachma. Greece can’t print euros, but they could print drachmas. Printing money to devalue a currency so as to pay off debts more quickly is a recipe for the kind of disaster we haven’t seen in Europe since the 1930s.

Issues do not live in a vacuum. There are worldviews behind every issue, and those worldviews need to be a part of whatever issue we are debating, otherwise we will be short-sighted, and the outcome will be the result of ill-informed voters and agenda-driven policy-makers. Now that President Obama has publicly stated that he is for gay marriage, which he says is a result of his ‘evolving’ view on the issue, “At a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” our nation is having to address the legality, and the core issues surrounding this issue: the causes and morality of homosexuality, again. Also of note, in the ABC interview in which Obama announced his position, he also said his decision was based on his faith in Jesus Christ and the Golden Rule, applying, ”Treat others the way you would want to be treated,” to his view on the issue. Even though Pres. Obama blamed VP Joe Biden for getting “a little bit over his skis” in publicly and preemptively announcing his embrace of gay marriage, thus forcing Obama to prematurely announce his own support for gay marriage, to which he said, “Would I have preferred to have done this in my own way, in my own terms, without I think, there being a lot of notice to everybody? Sure. But all’s well that ends well,” the president made his announcement on the Eve of a huge Hollywood fundraiser (a $40,000 per person, $15 million raised event) for his re-election campaign. And we all know Hollywood predominately supports the gay agenda. In today’s postmodern society, which has cast its moral compass to the wind and is running full force in making decisions based on feelings and group-think, rather than on non-emotional, well researched positions, it is critical to be informed, as well as able to communicate the facts on issues. This requires a knowledge of the history, the stated motivations and agendas of advocates, the existing law on the issue(s), and wisdom based on time-tested truth. To make a decision based on anything less is, to say the least, faulty, and more often than not, disastrous. So, when we look at the changing worldviews that are rapidly occurring in every arena of our nation today, there’s nothing more effective than direct quotes and stated positions to shine the light on the reality of the mentalities and motivations that surround an issue, such as in this case, “gay rights.” For instance, Gay Rights Organizational Positions and Agendas: The Advocate ( http://www.advocate.com/ ), the national magazine for the gay rights movement. Then ACLU’s website ( http://www.aclu.org/LesbianGayRights/LesbianGayRightsMain.cfm ), advocates for gay rights. The Lambda Legal website ( http://www.lambdalegal.org/cgi-bin/iowa/index.html ), the “national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, the transgendered through impact litigation, education, and public policy work.” Here you can see Glaad’s media awards ( http://www.glaad.org/ ), and the gay movement’s think tank National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s Policy Institute ( http://www.ngltf.org/ ). GLSEN’s (Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network) website ( http://www.glsen.org/ ) “envisions a future in which every child learns to respect and accept all people regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.” From their Little Black Book given to junior and senior high school students you’ll read, ”Hey Queer Boys! Welcome to queer life in the 21st Century! Is this a great time to be gay or what? We are faced with important challenges every day like the right to marry, homophobia, coming out, STDs and HIV/AIDS, but queers have never enjoyed more visibility.” And Youth.org www.youth.org is an online source of youth gay sites. Keep reading… This site, True Spirit , http://www.true-spirit.org/programming/03workshoplist.htm lists the workshops available at True Spirit conferences on such subjects such as the risk of breast cancer even after “…FTMs, transmen, or anyone born female-bodied who uses testosterone; ” and intersex activism ideas for “changing our world.” Other conference workshops, remember these are for youth, were on, ”How to Do SM [Sadomasochism];” one devoted to “polyamory,” an activist term for multiple-partner sexual unions entitled, “Turning girls into boys” at http://wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=26569 . See Americans for Truth article on the ethics of doctors surgically changing young women’s bodies into males: http://www.americansfortruth.com/HRCTrueSpirit2002.html . If you want to know the outlined agenda of the gay movement with steps for America to accept homosexuality as normal, see “The Overhauling of Straight America: Waging Peace Part Two” ( http://www.defendthefamily.com/_docs/resources/8142838.pdf ). This was written in 1987, and states, “To desensitize the public is to help it view homosexuality with indifference instead of with keen emotion…if you can only get them to think that it is just another thing, with a shrug of their sholders then your battle for legal and social rights is virtually won.” The Pro-Family Law Center’s website ( http://www.abidingtruth.com ) as alot of additional information on the subject. Focus on the Family provided additional quotes from an After the Ball event, which outlined key points of the gay agenda: “Talk about gays and gayness as loudly and as often as possible.” ”Portray gays as victims, not as aggressive challengers.” “Give homosexual protectors a just cause.” “Make gays look good.” “Make the victimizers look bad.” “Get funds from corporate America.”
