Greek Troubles Beginning to Spiral

Greek troubles are reaching a tipping point.  The new government couldn’t form a governing coalition willing to deal with their financial woes as the leftists are unwilling to be forced into unpopular austerity measures.  So, a new election must be held with the populist left riding an anti-austerity wave.  Not excellent. But events are moving quicker than a calendar can anticipate — the euro is down to $1.27 as the money fleeing Greece only accelerates.  The Greek stock market hasn’t been this low since 1990.  In the midst of all this, there’s speculation that Spain and Italy may also have to reassess their relationship with the euro zone — another 26 Italian banks were downgraded today .  American markets, which were generally down again today, are starting the process of decoupling as much as they can before that final ripple comes:  the eventual reappearance of the drachma. Greece can’t print euros, but they could print drachmas.  Printing money to devalue a currency so as to pay off debts more quickly is a recipe for the kind of disaster we haven’t seen in Europe since the 1930s.

EPA Enforcement Tactics Inspired by Crucifixion

Some reckon that the environmentalists are so intense, it’s kind of like they’re in a fringe religious cult .  I agree some of them are kind of cult-like in their devotion to the cause.  On that theme, Al Armendariz, the head of the EPA’s Region 6, compared his EPA enforcement methods to the pagan Roman practice of crucifixion during a meeting in 2010. (Start at about 0:25) Armandariz apologized and all, but the hurt is done — in a time of frustratingly high gas prices and in the middle of a tense political season, here’s another Obama appointee on video saying something inappropriate and divisive.  It’s clearly been amateur-hour in that West Wing since January 2009. Once again the left simply has not come to terms with the impact YouTube has had and continues to have on their credibility.

Tax Day 2012

Ben Franklin once said, “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”  I hope the former isn’t in your future any time soon, but you’d better get your procrastinating a** to the post office — it’s tax day and the clock’s ticking! I completed and mailed my taxes the Tuesday after Presidents Day, receiving a refund shortly thereafter.  At the end of the day I still managed to pay a sizable amount of federal income taxes after my refund so I am still part of the 53% . Next Tax Day things will feel different.  Some are calling it “ taxmageddon ” — the result of letting the Bush tax cuts expire which will nail millions of Americans who pay federal income taxes with a $3,800 hike per household.  Businesses and the investor class will get crushed mightily, keeping the job situation stagnant.  As we’ve all experienced in the Obama economy, uncertainty is an job killer. No wonder Election Day is over 6 months from Tax Day.  Elections matter, especially this year. By the way, how long do the tax rates have to stay place before it’s called the “tax rate” rather than the “Bush tax cuts?”  Just wondering — it’s been nearly 10 years.
